Friends Of Parkinson’s

Due to illness and age related issues resulting in lack of numbers, the closure of the Parkinson’s Gainsborough and District Support Group was decided from Parkinson’s UK. This was a small vulnerable yet valuable group. Instead of supporting it with help and assistance and because there was no volunteer to take on this role Parkinson’s UK closed the group retrieving funds.

Non for Profit Community Group

The Parkinson’s exercise group had been running since 2010 purely designed to suit the needs of the District Support Group members. As there was no other alternative to this type of support in Gainsborough it was critical for many aspects of their daily life.

Since the Parkinson’s Gainsborough and District Support Group folded in 2016 Friends of Parkinson’s Gainsborough.

It is paramount to maintain sustainability of this one and only Exercise group designed particularly for those that suffer from the disease.

The older person can be very vulnerable and isolated on a daily basis, the less they do the less they want to do. A loss of a partner can isolate them even more making them a little more anxious and feeling low. With the additional ageing of the body along with chronic ailments, diseases and joint conditions, the need for social interaction and general care is paramount.

Unlike Dementia individuals that suffer from Parkinson’s take a low profile and hide symptoms in shame or embarrassment from the community. This creates a very dark place. A friendly class with support is a warm welcome to everyone; therefore it is very important to develop the support group to engage all age groups and abilities and to reduce the stigma of this weakening disease.

The other area of need is for bespoke one 2 one’s in the participants own homes to gain confidence and ability to rebuild a life coping with Parkinson’s mentally and physically.
This has not only proven to be very successful but essential for personal development.

Support Groups

There is a lack of facilities for the mature or less able person generally in this area; however, the Support Group in Gainsborough for Parkinson’s is essential to both carer and sufferer.

If anybody would like to come along and meet the group, have a cuppa, chat with others and share, you are more than welcome.

Liz Clews is the trainer along with valued volunteers who help develop the group members and maintain continuity and stability for both participants and the group; it needs a regular source of backing to develop the ‘Support Group’

Est 2016: Friends of Parkinson’s Gainsborough always need help with growth, funding, strength and development, raising profile and awareness of this debilitating disease. Not just in Gainsborough but throughout Lincolnshire.

Sadly, there is no other specific exercise class either local or otherwise, the exercise regime is specific to Parkinson’s and other neurological needs.

If anyone else would like to volunteer in any other way like fundraising or marketing, please do not hesitate to contact Liz. Every Little Helps A Lot!

Any money raised helps towards running the exercise sessions but also for private one to one sessions in your own home or within the Active Senior Hub at West Lindsey Leisure Centre; this aids to build confidence to hopefully attend group exercise.
